 Now is always the
time that you can apply what you are learning about
yourself as you watch your experiences of a natural
disaster, such as an earthquake, a human-created disaster
such as a war and the suffering it is causing, or
a personal disaster such as a divorce or the death
of a child or a friend – whether you can experience
your emotions deeply, in terms of physical sensations
in your body. Now is the time to apply whatever you
have learned about yourself when you asked, “What
can I learn about myself from these experiences?”
Whatever you have learned, or suspect you have learned,
experiment with it. Apply it now. If you discovered
that your need to give or support others is based
on guilt because you have so much and people you are
seeing on the television have nothing, look at that
and ask yourself if you want the intention of guilt
to be a controlling influence in your life. If not,
pick another intention. This does not mean not to
give. It means give with a different intention, an
intention that feels healthy to you, that is life-giving
and life-affirming. Guilt is neither of those. If
you experience yourself as powerless, or as one who
must immediately launch into action, ask yourself,
“Why?” Is it because of compassion or
a sense of helplessness that you are driven to action?
Begin to use what
you have learned about yourself to change your life.
