Are you feeling
moved more than usual, perhaps more alive and interested?
Do you notice when something tragic or disastrous
is happening that you are in a different state, possibly
more open, or vulnerable, or calm, or grateful for
what you have, who you are with, or you feel how precious
life is? These are some experiences of grace, and
there are many others. Grace gives you an experience
of what your life would be without your fears. It
is a temporary but very valuable experience if you
recognize it and use it. Your fears will return but
when they do, you will be able to address them instead
of being controlled by them when you realize that
you are able to permanently create in your life the
experience that you were given by grace. In fact,
you were given it for that reason.
If you have these
experiences while you are suffering, or watching the
great suffering of others, you are being touched by
grace. Do not dismiss it as fantasy, pain avoidance,
or flight from reality. Knowing that you are safe
in the midst of the greatest danger is not a fantasy
when it touches you and calms you and nourishes you.
It is an accurate perception that your fears have
masked from you all your life. Grace gives you a glimpse
of the fearless life that is meant to be your life,
and your job then becomes to make that glimpse of
a possibility into the permanent reality of your life.
You begin by acting on that glimpse – of gratitude,
or calm, or aliveness, or sense of safety –
and continuing to act on it, even after your fears
return, as though that glimpse were of something real.
It is.
